YouTube Video: The Great Pacific Garbage Patch - Good Morning America
This video is a rude-awakening for those who have been asleep to the fact that our oceans are utterly and completely polluted. We can’t afford to turn our other cheek away from the truth about what is really going on in our oceans and on our planet. Our entire eco-system has been altered. It’s quite far from an easy fix. What’s most important is that we all start to make changes on an individual level so that we don’t keep making the problem worse. It’s time for all of us to make an extra effort to take responsibility to reduce our waste…especially plastic. There are some companies, however, that are helping to spread the word in addition to giving back to our planet. The following is a list of some of these companies and organizations that are on the right track:
- KOR One donates 1% of all sales of their Hydration Vessels to a select group on non-profits that focus on water-related issues.
- Reusable Bags is a member of 1% for the planet and they have been inspiring others to reduce their consumption of plastic since 2002. Learn more about some of their donation partners here:
Waterkeeper Alliance - An international grassroots advocacy organization with 182 programs world-wide dedicated to preserving and protecting water from pollution.
Save The Bay - The oldest and largest organization working exclusively to protect, restore and celebrate San Francisco Bay.
Rainforest Action Network - Rainforest Action Network (RAN) uses hard-hitting markets campaigns to align the policies of multinational corporations with widespread public support for environmental protection. RAN believes that a sustainable world can be created in our lifetime, and that aggressive action must be taken immediately to leave a safe and secure world for our children.
Rainforest Alliance -The Rainforest Alliance works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior.
New American Dream - New American Dream helps Americans consume responsibly to protect the environment, enhance quality of life, and promote social justice.
Roots and Shoots - The Roots & Shoots program is about making positive change happen—for our communities, for animals and for the environment.
The Surfrider Foundation - A non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our world’s oceans, waves and beaches.
The Seattle Green Bag Campaign - A local grassroots movement to promote environmental sustainability by reducing the unnecessary use of disposable bags. It’s estimated that Seattle shoppers use 360 million disposable shopping bags, paper and plastic, each year. Last year, after large voter outcry against this waste, Seattle passed an ordinance establishing a 20 cent fee on disposable shopping bags.
1% For the Planet - Since 2002, 1% For The Planet has inspired members of the business community to contribute 1% of sales to environmental groups around the world. In return, this growing alliance of companies is given the opportunity not only to see their self-worth rise, but their net worth climb as well.
Please take some time to learn about the endeavors of each of these companies and how you can help support them.
Thank you,
